LOCKPORT, N.Y. — It was a storm that left thousands without power, hundreds with property damage and one company with their hands full. “I was taking 50 to 60 messages per hour,” Linda Bowman said. Robert’s Roofing and Siding in Lockport was one of many companies responding to calls from April’s wind storm. General Manager Jerry Roberts said he witnessed the worst of it when trees toppled on homes. “They broke rafters and cracked walls inside the home, and some houses were even shifted,” Roberts said.

Office manager Linda Bowman said business is still booming. “It hasn’t slowed down, not even halfway yet.” But it hasn’t always been this busy.  In business since the 1940′s, Bowman added the company was hit hard by the slow economy. “We had a really rough winter, obviously with the recession and the weather.” That all changed April 28, when Bowman said a line of customers in need of repairs stretched out the door. That prompted Roberts to bring on new employees, a rarity in today’s economy.

“We’ve put on a couple of roofers in the field, just to keep up with the repair work and damage we’ve had,” Roberts said. Bowman got a little extra help, too. “We’ve been crazy here. I had to hire a receptionist to help me out.  So she’s taking over the phones.” Almost a month later, the company is still taking calls about wind damage; something Roberts called the storm’s silver lining. “There’s so much damage and a lot of business. I mean it’s good, we’re hoping to turn it into a positive if we can.”
